Spot on. Women + Culture + Work
Ins Licht gerückt. Frauen + Kultur + Arbeit
Exhibition catalog
Working in the cultural sector is rarely straightforward. Beyond talent and qualifications, it demands patience, organizational skills, network building, flexibility, and steadfast determination. It requires a willingness to take personal risk under unpredictable conditions while juggling many different tasks at once. Berlin's cultural landscape relies in no small part on the strengths and abilites of women who manage to embody these things every day.
The 34 women portrayed here represent a broad spectrum of the cultural sector: actors, musicians, museum workers, a dancer, a textile artist, a painter, a bookseller, and many more. They are at different stages in their careers and work independently, in long-termin positions, or in precarious employment situations. They live alone or with partners; many have children, others do not. Most were not born in Berlin. Some originally come from the other German states, others from Poland, the United States, or Lebanon. All of these women live or work in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and were contacted through the networks of the exhibition makers. Whit this exhibit, these women and their work take center stage.
